Small Business Recovery Checklist: What to Fix First
Share
When a small business is underperforming, the answer is rarely “do everything.” The better approach is to identify the largest revenue constraint, fix it, measure the result and then move to the next constraint.
This recovery checklist is intentionally different from our complete guide to 10 costly small-business mistakes. Use this page to decide the order of execution.
Step 1: Confirm the offer
- Can a customer explain what you sell after viewing the homepage?
- Is the primary product or service easy to find?
- Does the page state who the offer is for and what happens next?
- Is the price, quote process or consultation path clear?
If the offer is unclear, do not spend more money driving traffic yet.
Step 2: Test the conversion path
- Click every main call-to-action.
- Submit every lead form.
- Complete a test checkout when practical.
- Confirm notifications reach the correct email.
- Review the experience on both mobile and desktop.
A broken form or unclear checkout can waste every marketing dollar sent to the site.
Step 3: Review customer acquisition
Identify where the last ten real customers or serious inquiries came from. Separate measurable sources—Google, referrals, social media, marketplaces, direct outreach—from assumptions. Concentrate on the source producing the strongest combination of qualified interest and purchase intent.
Step 4: Fix trust and presentation
- Use consistent business names and brand language.
- Remove unsupported claims.
- Show real products, project examples and clear policies.
- Make contact information easy to verify.
- Keep product availability and descriptions accurate.
Step 5: Improve follow-up
Define who responds, how quickly inquiries are reviewed, what information is collected and what the next step should be. A simple repeatable follow-up process is more valuable than collecting leads that receive inconsistent responses.
Step 6: Measure one business outcome
Track qualified inquiries, booked consultations, completed orders, average order value and repeat purchases. Traffic and impressions are useful diagnostics, but they are not substitutes for revenue-producing actions.
